What is Design for Manufacturability (DFM)
- Design for Manufacturability (DFM) may be described as a method for evaluating product designs so as to identify
likely manufacturing cost drivers, and then generating solutions for mitigation of these cost drivers.
- The use of DFM techniques early in the design cycle results in shorter design delays, lower costs, fewer
manufacturing problems, and higher quality. In today’s market these are must have attributes, and not doing a
DFM Analysis on your new products is a Competitive Disadvantage !

What is the Pro-DFM Solution
- The most effective way to introduce DFM in your company is to integrate it in the New Product
Development (NPD) process. To accomplish this integration in an effective and efficient manner,
we have developed Pro-DFM, a MS-Excel® based worksheet tool for DFM analysis.
- Pro-DFM provides the NPD team with the capability to generate several key metrics about the new
design. These include:
(i) Estimated Unit Production Cost
(ii) Inventory Penalty Cost
(iii) DFM Part Evaluation Penalty
(iv) DFM Assembly Evaluation Penalty
(v) DFM Part Reduction Opportunity
- A NPD team that is able to accurately predict the above metrics is better positioned to
deliver new products on schedule, with lower unit costs, and a faster production launch.
Pro-DFM provides you with the tools to make this a reality.
